After the bizarre domestic terrorist shooting on June 17, 2015, at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina by Dylan Roof, there has been speculation of getting rid of the Confederate flag at the South Carolina State House. There has been talks discussing the removal of the Confederate flag that sways in front of the State House, and also refutes of not getting rid of such a historical symbol of the State House. You can already guess which people stood for what position.
On June 27, 2015, a brave, honorable and beautiful soul, Miss Bree Newsome, climbed the flag pole outside of the SC State House, with help from James Tyson, and took down the flag. She stayed up on the flag pole with the flag in hand, for a few minutes, screaming out chants. As she made her way to the ground, there were police officers and sheriffs waiting to arrest her, but she wasn’t phased. Taking down that flag, which represented such a dark and horrific past for many black people, especially after the shooting of the 9 victims in Charleston, was more important than being arrested by the police.
My team, along with many people that support the equalization of black people in America, would like to applaud Miss Bree Newsome on a job well done! You are more than a hero, a role model, and a paragon of black justice. I know you didn’t do this act for fame, and that’s why you are an ‘Expectation Breaker’!
