Our Independence Day: Alton Sterling

For the last couples of years, I’ve personally stopped celebrating holidays because of the intentions of its establishment. Everyday is a holiday. Everyday is a celebration. One or two days out of the year shouldn’t just be a special day to enjoy life with those you love, nearest to your heart, but then again I digress. A couple of days after many of Americans celebrated “Independence Day”, a young black man by the name of Alton Sterling was shot down by police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Yes, in the words of DJ Khaled, “Anotha One!” noexp alt

Needless to say, the story of Alton Sterling was just exposed, so just like everybody else, I don’t have all the facts. We probably will never get all of the facts, but you know what? The fact is that this young man was human, and yet he was shot down like he had little to no purpose in the world. Once again, another colored person was gunned down by the same people we give our trust and rights to. When does it stop? noexp jes

Just like Jesse Williams said at the BET Awards after receiving his Humanitarian award, “This idea of having to explain why it’s racial, while we’re standing in our own blood is silly. It’s racial because it doesn’t happen to white people.” Nope, not in this country, or around the world. It is annoying to have to constantly protect, enlighten and show people that we are love. We are human. We are special. We are not hateful. We are pro-us. We are not anti-you. We are the History you stole, in which you put a white-face on it. We are NOT the “savages” or “thugs”, history shows who the real “savages” and “thugs” are and were. We are loving, nurturing, and forgiving people. When provoked we fight back.

It is sad to have to repeatedly state our peace, but WE must. It is sad that WE have to constantly show them WE aren’t playing with them, but WE have to. It is sad that WE constantly have to remind them that WE are Human beings, but WE have to. It is heartbreaking that they keep killing our brothers, fathers, uncles, husbands, sons, sisters, mothers, and family, but they do! WE must stop killing our family, too. WE must understand WE are all ONE. Once, again WE are NOT our grandparents, WE will fight back in every meaning of the word. With love, WE constantly fight back. With patience, we’ve been fighting back. With truth, WE fight back. WE won’t stop!
